The Ridiculous Mug (Power Mug)

Series: Digital Art Medium: Digital Art Year: 2022

This Ridiculous Mug pays homage to the Nintendo Power Glove of the late 1980s. The game accessory was supposed to usher in an age of "Virtual reality" in the 80s. Consequently, technical issues with the glove made sales drop, and the Power Glove never really took off.

The Power Mug is made from a slip-cast mold created from a glove bought at a hardware store, and the keypad from a calculator. It is 100% ceramic, with hand painted underglaze. It's an odd shaped mug so you can't really put it down until you finish whatever you poured into it. How ridiculous is that?!?

This piece explores the intersection of technological nostalgia and functional failure, transforming an iconic gaming peripheral into an equally impractical domestic object. The work comments on the cyclical nature of technological promises and the way failed innovations become objects of cultural fascination.
